Physical Education

Teaching and Learning

  • The Department of Military Science is establishing a new partnership with IU-Kokomo, with an expected enrollment of 15 cadets in the fall of 2008.

Research, Scholarship and Creative Activity

  • Dr. Tony Kaleth, Associate Professor of Physical Education, is a co-investigator on a $2 million NIH grant titled “Exercise-based Motivational Interviewing for Fibromyalgia.”  This is the largest grant in which a member of the school’s faculty has participated.
  • Dr. Rafael Bahamonde has been invited to be the keynote speaker at the 2008 International Sports Science Congress in Seoul, Korea

Civic Engagement

  • The School of Physical Education and Tourism Management celebrated its 100th  anniversary in Indianapolis in September  2007 with a large gathering at the Athenaeum Turners,  the original home of the school in the city.
  • The Department of Tourism, Conventions and Event Management received a gift from the Efroymson Fund of the Central Indiana Community Foundation to support a guest lecture series bringing world-renowned experts in arts and culture to Indianapolis.  The inaugural lecture in the fall of 2008 will feature best-selling author Frances Mayes.
  • A team of faculty members from the School of Physical Education and Tourism Management is providing health and wellness consulting services, conducting health screenings, and establishing health fairs for employees of the IndyGO bus system in an effort to improve health and reduce medical costs.

Diversity

  • Study Abroad agreements have been established between the School of Physical Education and Tourism Management and Heilbronn University in Germany and Bond University in Australia.  The study abroad programs will be supported by a grant from the  Efroymson Fund of the Central Indiana Community Foundation to the Department of Tourism, Conventions and Event Management.

External Awards and Appointments

  • Dr. Katie Stanton was awarded the 2007 Indiana Down Syndrome Star Award in recognition of her work in establishing and operating the Motor Activity Clinic for Children with Down’s Syndrome.
