Herron School of Art And Design

Teaching and Learning

  1. Herron’s proposal for a Master of Fine Arts in Visual Art and Public Life (MFA) was approved, and the first graduate students will enroll Fall 2008.
  2. Herron has received public sculpture commissions from the New Indianapolis Airport and the Community North Hospital. Each identified two locations for student sculptures, and is creating budgets for the rotation of the work.
  3. Organized and led by Herron faculty members, twenty-seven students participated in two study-abroad programs studying the arts in both Italy and Greece.
  4. The National Endowment for the Arts bestowed a grant on Honors Art, a summer program in visual art instruction for high school-aged students.
  5. The sculpture faculty initiated the “1st Biennial Iron Pour” of the Indianapolis Art Center. Herron students participated with over 100 molds. Our furnace was one of four in the event and poured 3,000 pounds of iron.

Research, Scholarship and Creativity Activities

  1. HERRON SCHOOL OF ART AND DESIGN hosted the Furniture Society’s 10th Annual Conference with faculty member Phil Tennant organizing an exhibition entitled “Furniture at the Crossroads”
  2. A review appeared in the November 2006 issue of “Art in America” praising Herron Galleries Curator David Russick’s 25-year retrospective of the work of Robert Lostutter.
  3. Greg Hull, in cooperation with Mario Morales of Thompson Consumer Electrics, participated in the Indianapolis Arts council “Picture Windows: Urban Interpretations Project” with a multi-media installation entitled “Endless Horizons”.
  4. Linda Adele Goodine’s photography was featured in a solo exhibition at Gallerie Gora in Montreal, Canada.
  5. Steve Budington participated in a 3-person show, “Calma Apparente” in Italy at the Fondazione Ambrosetti Arte Contemporanea.
  6. David Morrison’s piece “Passion & Process” was included in an exhibition, “Impressions from America’s Master Printmakers”, of 25 top printmakers in the country seen at the Louisville Visual Art Association.

Civic Engagement

  1. HERRON SCHOOL OF ART AND DESIGN received a major gift from patrons Frank and Katrina Basile to support The Center for Art, Design and Public Life. The Basile Center proactively seeks community partnerships and responds to requests for public art and design work, matching students desiring professional practice to the commissions.
  2. “Breath” by faculty member Greg Hull was selected to be fabricated and installed in the Parking Structure Atrium of the new Indianapolis International Airport.
  3. Student Rik Tommasone designed the inaugural bronze Lilly Medal awarded to the winner of Indianapolis Prize for conservation of animal species.
  4. Supported by the American Masterpieces Initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts and Indiana Arts commission, Herron Galleries Director David Russick presented a major exhibition of art by Ed Paschke.
  5. Faculty member Greg Hull and a 5-person team have been selected for the Indianapolis Rotary Gateway Project to design and implement a Gateway icon for Indianapolis.
  6. “Fit to Breed? The History and Legacy of Indiana Eugenics, 1907-2007” at the Indiana State Museum was designed by Herron student-teams.
  7. Students, working closely with the Humane Society of Indianapolis education department, will develop a conceptual plan for a traveling exhibition.
  8. Students have entered Phase 2 of the “Print, Education, Technology Laboratory and Exhibition Plan for the Indianapolis Museum of Art.
  9. Herron students researched and worked on curriculum development for the program “Learn to Give, Environmental Stewardship Program for K-12 Schools” in Muskegon, Michigan.
  10. The illustrations of students, under the direction of faculty member Kathy O’Connell, were printed in the prestigious “The Society of Illustrators 2006 Educators Symposium Student Sketchbook Anthology”.
  11. Herron students have developed proposals for institutional identity and/or promotion materials for United Way of Central Indiana’s “Ready to Learn, Ready to Earn” campaign, the Humane Society of Indianapolis, St. Louis For Kids, and an online tutorial for the Court Observation Project in Washington, DC, “Rock for Riley 2006”, the National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies, “Grape Escape” for the Jackson Center for children with Cerebral Palsy, Indiana Canine Assistance program for prisoners who train assistance dogs, Indiana Dollars for Scholars Hoosier Heroes Program, “An Evening with an Olympian: United States Synchronized Swimming Olympic Team”, Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Indiana, “Woman To Woman Midwest”, and the Damien Center.

Diversity

  1. Artwork by students, who are members of Spectrum, a student organization providing mentoring for minority students, participated in the exhibition “Heritage Spectrum” at the Indiana State Museum Legacy Theater.
  2. Student members of Spectrum participated in an exhibition at Indiana Black Expo in the Cultural Arts Pavilion.
  3. The Shared Heritage Scholarship Fund, designated for student retention and available to minority students, is established and fund-raising for endowments is underway.
  4. Inuit artists Germaine Arnaktauyok and Mathew Nuqingaq in their first visit to the United States worked with Herron faculty and students in a week-long workshop filmed by WFYI.
  5. Working in partnership with Imani Workshops, a branch of the Family Preservation Initiative under the  IU-Kenya Partnership:  The Academic Model for the Prevention and Treatment of HIV/AIDS (AMPATH), Herron Visual Communication students developed proposals for institutional identity.
  6. Herron Visual Communication students have developed proposals for institutional identity and  promotion materials for Indiana State Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

External Awards and Appoints

    • Associate Professor of Sculpture, Greg Hull awarded Contemporary Arts Fellowship with the final stage of activity and research in Beddles, Alaska.
    • 2007 Creative Renewal Fellowships awarded to Herron faculty and staff: William Potter, Melissa Parrott, Phil Tennant, and David Russick.
    • Cindy Borgmann received the 2006 AEAI (Art Education Association of Indiana) Distinguished Fellows Award for leadership and dedication to art education and the 2006 NAEA (National Art Education Association) Western Region Art Educator of the Year: Higher Education Division for a research book published through them.
