Center for Service Learning
AY 2006-07 was a banner year for CSL, and all of IUPUI, in terms of recognition of our efforts related to civic engagement. We had many accomplishments, but three designations particularly stand out. While all three of these reflect activities spearheaded by CSL, two of them also highlight the activities and commitment of IUPUI as a campus to its mission of civic engagement.
- Presidential Award for Community Service: In the inaugural year for this award, IUPUI was selected by the Corporation for National and Community Service as one of three universities in the country to receive the Presidential Award for exceptional accomplishments in General Student Community Service activities. 510 universities applied for this award. Additionally, the campus received Distinction for Hurricane Katrina Relief Service. Both of these awards are part of the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. One of the key criteria for the award in the General category was the percent of Federal Work Study funds committed to support students in off-campus work placements. At IUPUI, nearly 30% of the campus Federal Work Study funds are used annually to support students in community-based placements, far exceeding the national requirement of 7%. Last year, 104 students participated as America Reads and America Counts Coaches, providing 13,748 hours of free tutoring to 416 youth at 12 community sites.
- Carnegie Classification for “Community Engagement”: IUPUI was selected as one of twelve colleges and universities to participate in designing a new, voluntary classification for “community engagement” through the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. In 2006, the campus was among the first of 62 campuses in the country to receive the “Community Engagement” designation for both “Curricular Engagement” and “Community Partnerships.”
- Signature Center Designation: The Center for Service and Learning received a designation as a Signature Center for IUPUI. The CSL had one of the 19 proposals funded out of 71 submitted. The Signature Center activities will further establish CSL as a leader in research and scholarship on service learning. The Center for Service and Learning Research Collaborative (CSLRC) will:
- Increase the capacity of IUPUI faculty to engage in research on service learning practice, initially on three themes: (a) international service learning, (b) assessing outcomes, and (c) diversity and persistence.
- Convene internal and external service learning scholars to develop new conceptual frameworks and methodological tools to improve the quality of service learning research.
- Disseminate high quality scholarship through four edited books, Research Briefs, annual Service Learning Research monographs, presentations at scholarly conferences, and publications in peer-reviewed journals.
