The history of Madame C.J. Walker and Indiana Avenue were the focus of media projects produced by School of Informatics faculty and students in collaboration with the Madame Walker Foundation.  Among the projects were a video documentary history of the Madame Walker Theatre and a full-scale immersive 3D virtual reality model of the theater for viewing in online virtual worlds and the IU Virtual Reality Theater.

AMPATH (the Academic Model for the Prevention and Treatment of HIV), a program that grew out of the partnership between the School of Medicine and the Moi University Teaching and Referral Hospital in Kenya, received a five-year, $60 million grant for the prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS in Kenya.  In a country that has 2.5 million people living with HIV/AIDS, the AMPATH program combines research with training and treatment and has been described as the most comprehensive HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment program in Africa.  AMPATH treats over 60,000 patients at 18 sites in urban and rural Kenya and was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007.

The Centers for Disease Control has contracted with the School of Medicine to research and develop strategies that will enable local, state, and regional organizations to respond rapidly to potentially catastrophic infectious disease outbreaks and other public health emergencies.    

In a national competition, Herron School of Art and Design Professor Greg Hull’s sculpture, “Breath,” was selected for a commissioned project at the Indianapolis International Airport.  The sculpture will be suspended in the airport parking garage’s five-story atrium, which opened in late 2008.
