Status of Performance Indicator Enhance civic activities, partnerships, and patient and client services

The School of Dentistry requires all students to participate in providing dental health care to the city, region, and state. The curriculum for fourth-year professional dental students and second-year undergraduate dental hygiene students includes a service learning rotation with SEAL INDIANA, the school´s statewide mobile oral health program. Fourth-year dental students also do a rotation at the People´s Dental Clinic Homeless Program. Other sites for dental student services include University Hospital , the Riley Hospital for Children Dental Clinic, and the Grassy Creek Clinic.

Faculty member Josette Jones in the School of Informatics received grant funding for Phase II of the Virginia Henderson International Nursing Library. Phase II includes refinement of Phase I, plus the development of a virtual lab for informatics and research students, as well as nurse researchers.

The School of Medicine hosted its first conference on HIV/AIDS in the developing world in October 2004. "HIV/AIDS in the Developing World: Lessons Learned and the Way Forward" convened some of the world´s top HIV/AIDS experts to share expertise with over 250 participants.

Physics Professor and Associate Dean Andy Gavrin of the School of Science served as Director of the U.S. Physics Talent Search and as a member of the organizing committee of the International Physics Talent Search. More than 20 countries worldwide participated as part of the World Year of Physics celebrations in 2005.

The Center on Philanthropy, School of Liberal Arts , initiated and now maintains a list of contributions received for tsunami relief by major U.S. nonprofit organizations. The list, which was a Fact of the Day on the White House Web site, has been consulted by the U.S. Department of State, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the United Nations Development Programme, representatives of the media, and the research office of National Geographic, among many others. This year, the Center also launched the Third Millennium Project, a leadership initiative created to expand philanthropy in the 21 st century among communities of color, women, and youth. The project is funded for five years by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation.

Nearly 700 Indiana teachers participated in Voyager U, a program created by School of Education faculty members Beth Berghoff, Jennifer Conner, Trish Weis, and Joy Seybold. The program was selected by the state to help teachers understand scientifically based reading research and to provide them with an array of effective tools and strategies for teaching reading in the elementary grades.

Faculty member Greg Hull of the Herron School of Art and Design designed and fabricated podiums for the 2004 World Swimming Championships, held at Conseco Fieldhouse and televised in over 300 countries. The unique podiums, which were used for the competition´s 40 medal ceremonies, incorporated internal lighting and kinetic elements.
